Rhyme and Learn

http://rhymenlearn.com/
Rhyme ‘n Learn is math and science taught by mnemonics.  A mnemonic is a learning aid.  It uses word associations like rhymes so that a term or fact is easier to recall later.  An example of a mnemonic is “In fourteen hundred ninety two Columbus sailed the ocean blue.”

Rhyme ‘n Learn was created Joe Ocando.  He taught math and science to students of all ages and discovered that many find it difficult to memorize hundreds of new terms and facts.  He also found that rote learning is boring and not very effective for long term retention.  Type a math or science term in the search bar to find a mnemonic for it.

Get The Math

http://www.thirteen.org/get-the-math/
Textbooks and exams are all good when it comes to teaching math, but how do the students know when/how to apply that math in the real world?  GetTheMath is a project that aims to do just that, i.e. teaching students how math is used in the fields of fashion design, video game design and music through simple and short videos.

Once students have watched the videos, they can take online quizzes to apply what they learned to a real world problem.  The website also has a 30 minute video showing how a particular teacher used GetTheMath to teach his kids. High school students can also participate in a math contest to sharpen their math skills.

The website mostly focuses on the use of algebra as compared to other areas of math.

Watch, Know, Learn - Free Educational Videos, Organized

We believe that everyone should have the same opportunity to learn. The best way to make this possible, we believe, is to organize into one, super directory the hundreds of thousands of good videos currently available on the Internet. To make this a reality, we invite teachers, instructors and educators to suggest videos for inclusion into our directory, and then to review, approve, and assign those videos into appropriate categories using a wiki framework and philosophy. The videos are the highest quality found on the World Wide Web, cover all major educational topics from elementary to secondary schools (or age range 1 – 18), and are Kid Safe!

WatchKnowLearn has indexed over 20,000 educational videos, placing them into a directory of over 3,000 categories. The videos are available without any registration or fees to teachers in the classroom and to students at home 24/7. Users can dive into our innovative directory or search for videos by subject and age level. Video titles, descriptions, age level information, and ratings are all edited for usefulness. Our Web site invites broad participation in a new kind of wiki system, guided by teachers. We have had a tremendously positive response from educators to the website. If we continue to work together, we can create an incredible, free, educational resource for students across the world.
